These past few months have been such a journey I have been blessed to share with my National Youth Poet Laureate finalist cohort. This past weekend in Omaha, I was announced as the @nationalyouthpoetlaureate First Runner Up! Thank you so much to @newriters, @urbanwordnyc, and the NYPL program for this experience and platform to share my work and to develop memorable moments with my cohort, @danielumemezie @rishi_combinase @chloexinc , in such a short amount of time. I represented Filipinos with my harana and Pinay pride! I represented Philly with my Spoken Word and unapologetic “let me tell you how it is.” I hope the ancestors and my community are proud. I am so excited for what the future holds!

Upcoming:
I will be performing on May 2nd at the Koubek Center, Live Arts Miami with LALA wips! @liveartsmiami It’s my first big performance in Miami! I will also be a teaching artist at MECA Houston @meca_houston this June hosting workshops and presenting our premier work “Agos y Viento” for our 2025 NEFA grant @nefa_1976 and excited to go on tour with my first stop in New Orleans this October presented by Bayou Barkada @bayoubarkada as well as plans for a poetry play for Philadelphia Fringe. Look out!

It was great weekend In Philly. I screened my latest poetry film, Harana and was awarded third place in the open category. Thank you WHYY! @whyy @whyyedu

Though Harana is traditionally about courtship in the Philippines, In this film, I highlighted my experience witnessing my mom go through physical domestic abuse in a same gender-loving relationship, in which I protected her with my young tiny body. Making this film helped me process the experience I buried for years. The script began from a poem I wrote during my tenure as youth poet laureate of Philadelphia where I publicly broke down reciting the poem for Domestic Violence Awareness Month with Women Against Abuse, but later, I came back to this poem and created something that evolved into healing. Like Bad Bunny, I believe shifting hate into images of love is a powerful form of art.

Ten years ago, my mom played “La Llorona”, a mythical character from a Mexican folklore for a Latin dance theater company led by Ana Ines King. She related the character to our Philippines “aswangs” (monsters) which were characters created by the Spanish colonizers to inflict fear on the indigenous population. Bedtime stories was a tool to control society starting with our children. Now I relate this to how the government is fictionaliizing immigrants as criminals and protestors as oppressors. The fictionalization of oppressed as deserving of their status remains justified through hoax.

I am so honored to receive this recognition as top 49 most influential LGBTQ+ leaders in Philadelphia from @phillygaynews. This past few years, the work I have done advocating for my communities has meant so much to me and I hope to continue it. In this recent move to Miami it is great to find that I still have community in Philadelphia. However, we are also working on our project with NEFA this year and we are so excited to be making connections with our communities. We have partnered with @pampanguenamiami in the making of a new screendance film “Halo Halo.” This upcoming month we are also going to perform at Macondo Coffee Roasters in Kendall Miami! Excited to share new poems and songs in celebration of Filipino American History Month (shared month with Hispanic heritage month) in collaboration with my friends Brandon, Shanti, and Pedro. So excited and grateful for this new journey.

Just recently moved from Philadelphia to Miami in my senior year of high school. I’m so grateful for Philly being my home for the past 10+ years and I’m grateful for all the community and mentors who have supported me and gotten me where I am today. It’s been a tough transition and it’s been hard to let go of some things but I’m grateful to be where I am. Philly will always be my home and I’ll be back once a month! But I’m so grateful to have made some Filipino friends my age in Miami which is something that was so rare for me before. Looking forward to this new journey :)

Just visited Thailand with my family (I accidentally overstayed my Philippine visit 😞). Going around Thailand, a country that avoided colonization, was very eye opening for me and made me feel at home. As someone who is Asian, I often struggle with the homogenization of Asians in the United States. In Thailand, I saw true diversity within Asian cultures, something I have never experienced before. I heard countless Asian languages surrounding me and met so many people who spoke multiple languages of other countries like the Philippines, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, India, and Thailand.

Being in a place of such cultural crossings, I observed our cultural connections and shared stories. Although, this trip has also caused me to wonder what the Philippines would have been like if we were not colonized. When I was younger I studied Balinese dance with Miss Sinta @moderocompany and I remember stories of Ramayana. I also heard the same stories in Thailand but I have never heard these stories in the Philippines. It makes me wonder how much 333 years of Spanish colonization and 50+ years of United States colonization has erased our culture. Now, I feel like many people are holding onto the idea of being Spanish and US colonies in the past and look down on our indigenous culture. It makes me sad because if we embraced who we truly are even after colonization, I feel that people would thrive so much more.

This was very eye opening for me to experience how so many inequities are still present in our society. I also will be speaking at TEDxPenn’s 2025 conference at the Annenberg Center at UPenn on March 29th!

I will be hosting poetry workshops on March 5, 19, April 2! More information can be found on the flyer on the second slide.

I also am going to perform for the Barnes Foundation first Sunday event on May 4. This will be a theatrical music, media, and poetry performance with a workshop. This is in collaboration with @ani_malayaworks @dru.seko @barnesfoundation

Also follow us for our premiere of Primx on May 31 at BAAD in the Bronx supported by #mapfund 2022. This project talks about the connection between the Philippines and Puerto Rico and practices of passing down culture generationally. @m.santimar @marsell.simone @athenaturek @baadbronx

Here is a collection of some things I’ve been up to! The first video is my cover of Misty in the style of Sarah Vaughan :) this past year has been filled with so many new experiences and learnings. I’m so grateful. I also can’t believe it’s been six months since I was announced Youth Poet Laureate! Here are some upcoming things to follow!

February 26: Mural Arts Design unveiling Polett walk 6-7

Out of blue open rehearsal March 8th at Houston at the Arts and Culture Lab @mono.mango @5301.18a

Big news! AniMalayaWorks (me and my mom’s longtime performance collective) are National theater project finalists!! @nefa_arts

I also will be speaking at TEDxPenn’s 2025 conference at the Annenberg Center at UPenn on March 29th!

I will be hosting poetry workshops on March 5, 19, April 2! More information can be found on the flyer on the second slide.

Willing participants from the workshops can share at the event, Freedom Rain Speaks, April 12 for Philly theater week. @studio34philly

I also am going to perform for the Barnes Foundation first Sunday event on May 4. This will be a theatrical music, media, and poetry performance with a workshop. This is in collaboration with @ani_malayaworks @dru.seko @barnesfoundation

Also follow us for our premiere of Primx on May 31 at BAAD in the Bronx supported by #mapfund 2022. This project talks about the connection between the Philippines and Puerto Rico and practices of passing down culture generationally. @m.santimar @marsell.simone @athenaturek @baadbronx

Come a long way from this first baby photo 😭😭 It’s been a year of growth, community, grief, and healing ❤️ I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and for the people who have guided me especially my mom who has always been there for me. Just finished the @evidencedance summer intensive and I never felt so tired but so alive. This experience has been so valuable for me and I’m so grateful for this opportunity. I’ve always been scared to go to dance intensives because I never had formal dance training especially in modern dance. But now Tito Arcell and Tito Ronald K. Brown have shown me that there is nothing to fear, that “practice make’s improvement not perfection,” and “to stay ready not get ready.” danced my heart out and I danced with community! Missing everyone from the intensive already.
